Panel Overview

The Final Day of Celebration [00:14] Host Anthony Carboni and host Andi Gutierrez welcome everyone to the final day of Star Wars Celebration 2022 in Anaheim, California. Carboni jokes that in case anyone forgot or hasn’t been watching the past three days, how dare they. [00:35] The hosts reflect on the unforgettable new reveals and returning favorites from the weekend. Gutierrez praises the fans for making every Celebration unforgettable, while Carboni calls hosting the live stream the best job in the world. [00:53] Carboni throws the broadcast down to their hype man, Cam, who is standing out in the massive crowd. Cam compares the event to a galactic family reunion, emphasizing that Star Wars is more than just a movie—it is a bond, a friendship, and a universe. [02:10] Carboni returns and jokingly recites a short poem he wrote to summon their roving cameraman, Gil. Gil walks out on stage to cheers, and Carboni points out that he was looking a little under the weather yesterday after hitting the Hilton lobby bar a bit too hard the night before. Carboni reminds him that it is a marathon, not a sprint. The Unscheduled Guest [03:13] Carboni attempts to officially start the show, asking the fans to cheer louder to build up energy. Just as he finishes building up the crowd, an unscheduled guest sneaks up behind him on the stage. [04:12] Anthony Daniels sneaks onto the stage. Carboni immediately starts playfully scolding him, telling the crowd not to encourage him because he is unscheduled and not supposed to be out there. [04:32] Daniels ignores him and addresses the crowd, formally apologizing for his solo panel the day prior. He explains that it was gate-crashed by somebody who was pretending to be an Ewok. He jokes that they only found out because the person was a little too tall for an Ewok, and they had him promptly removed. [05:02] Carboni continues to scold Daniels, telling him he has to wait until he is actually scheduled and cannot just walk out during the opening segment. He jokingly yells at the production team not to play Daniels’s introduction music again. [05:37] The production team plays a formal introduction for Daniels anyway, calling him the man who is fluent in over six million forms of communication. Carboni relents and welcomes C-3PO himself, Mr. Anthony Daniels. Trading Insults [06:32] Daniels takes a seat, and the two immediately begin trading playful insults. Carboni calls him a monster and pretends to forget his name, while Daniels jokes that Carboni is getting old and forgetting things. [07:03] Carboni asks Daniels how his Celebration has been, noting that he hosted Daniels’s solo panel the night prior. Daniels says that despite Carboni’s involvement, he had a wonderful show. He notes that the pent-up emotion from the fans after two years without an event created a terrific experience. [07:51] Carboni jokingly asks who Daniels thinks he is and where he gets off. Daniels smiles and says he is the invisible man behind the mask who has been hidden for 45 years. [08:18] Carboni sarcastically points out that a lot of real actors have come out to the stage who actually show their faces and convey real emotions. Carboni mimics C-3PO’s stiff movements, mocking the performance by saying he just tells Mr. Lucas he wants a break or needs to take a nap. [09:44] Daniels challenges Carboni, telling him he has to walk and speak at the same time, asking if he can handle it. He then demands Carboni spit out his chewing gum to show some respect. [10:02] Carboni drops the joke for a second to share a real story about the first time he met Daniels. After an interview, Daniels leaned in close to Carboni and confidently told him he could do his job. Suiting Up [10:27] Carboni tells the crowd he is now ready to prove that he can do Daniels’s job just as easily. The production crew begins bringing out pieces of a C-3PO costume to the stage. [11:14] Carboni stands up and begins putting the costume on, starting with the torso and legs. The crew adds weights to his legs to simulate how heavy the actual costume is. Daniels teases Carboni, telling him he looks like C-3PO but with broader shoulders and a bigger head. [12:17] Carboni jokingly asks the crew if they have any masking tape or gaffer tape to hold the suit together. Daniels points out that you cannot make a movie without gaffer tape, as it holds everything from the scenery to the costumes together. [13:05] Andi Gutierrez comes over to help Carboni put the C-3PO hands on. Daniels explains that for most of the early films, his costume hands were just plasticky clubs that he couldn’t actually pick anything up with. He had to use double-sided tape in the palms of his hands to fake grabbing props. He notes he only got functional hands for the last three films. [14:40] The crew brings out the final piece: the C-3PO head. Daniels notes that this is always the last piece to go on because it is incredibly hot and claustrophobic. The crew fits the helmet over Carboni’s head. [15:36] Daniels asks Carboni how it feels. Carboni jokes that he is totally cool and doesn’t feel at all like he has been buried alive. Daniels corrects his posture, noting that C-3PO stands very upright. Acting in the Armor [16:03] Daniels instructs Carboni to walk straight forward to a mark on the wall that says “fire extinguisher.” Carboni immediately complains that he cannot see anything below his nose. [17:13] Carboni attempts to walk toward the mark while delivering the classic line, “I am C-3PO, human-cyborg relations.” He struggles to walk gracefully. [17:48] Carboni stops and admits he is sweating profusely. He tells the crowd that his vision is reduced to a tiny pinpoint dot right in front of his face, and the helmet muffles his hearing so much that he can only hear about 40 percent of what Daniels is saying. He apologizes for mocking the role and admits he was terrified of walking right off the edge of the stage. [19:15] Carboni expresses a massive amount of respect for Daniels and anyone who plays a droid or creature in the Star Wars universe, noting that audiences don’t realize how little of the world the actors can actually perceive while still trying to act naturally in a scene. [19:43] Carboni points out that Daniels actually teaches a sort of boot camp for other actors playing droids. Daniels talks about working with the actors playing the waiter droids on The Rise of Skywalker, helping them navigate the limited vision while carrying actual trays of real drinks. [20:45] Carboni suggests setting up a booth at the next Celebration where fans can put on the suit and try to do a scene to see how hard it is. [21:06] Daniels points out a man in the audience named Gordon Tarpley, a droid builder who actually helped fit Carboni for the stage segment today. Daniels reveals that a standard C-3PO helmet wouldn’t fit over Carboni’s head, so Tarpley had to bring an extra-large version. Trusting the Crew [22:08] Carboni asks if the key to surviving the suit is heavy rehearsal and immense trust in the crew. [22:14] Daniels confirms both are vital. He explains that he blocks out every scene extensively because the suit destroys his peripheral vision. He demonstrates that while a human has peripheral vision up to 170 degrees, wearing the mask means he can only see straight ahead, requiring him to physically memorize exactly how many steps it takes to reach a prop or table without tripping. [23:44] Daniels praises his crew, explaining that they not only dress him but guide him to his marks and watch him constantly to ensure he doesn’t fall over anything that might have moved between takes. He notes that he is like a baby who has to trust them completely. [24:13] Carboni struggles to get out of the costume pieces and asks Daniels for help undoing a strap. Daniels laughs, noting that this is exactly what happens at the end of every shot when he is desperate to take the gear off. He jokes that when they peel the face off, he looks like a newly hatched chicken or something that came out of a microwave, while the human stars look perfectly crafted all day. [25:02] As Daniels looks over the costume pieces, he points out that there is glitter on the suit. He smiles and tells the crowd that the spirit of Carrie Fisher lives on because she is everywhere. [25:23] Carboni thanks Daniels for the segment, reiterating his profound new appreciation for everything Daniels does. The crowd cheers as the panel comes to a close.
