The Force Runs Strong in This Family: Star Wars, Chosen Families, and Belonging
The Force Runs Strong in This Family: Star Wars, Chosen Families, and Belonging
Panel Overview
Since 1977, Star Wars has represented alternatives to the nuclear family through adoptions, mentorships, and friendships. From Chewie looking after a dismantled Threepio, to the Mandalorian’s care of Grogu, characters have established bonds in surprising ways. This panel explores the role that chosen families and alternative models of care play in the saga. We’ll ask: what do onscreen families tell us about Star Wars, and ourselves? What does alternative care in Star Wars mean to LGBT or adopted people? And how does the idea of ‘family’ play out in fan communities? Join Rebecca Harrison (author and film critic), Jake Alexander (artist and author), Megen de Bruin-Molé (film academic), Clarisse Loughrey (film critic and podcast host) and Millicent Thomas (podcast founder) for this discussion about chosen, adopted and alternative families. In a divided world where rebels often struggle to find a home, we’ll celebrate family and belonging in all its forms.
