Star Wars English Class began through the Star Wars community on TikTok, where Fern and Julia met and became friends. Fern, a high school English teacher and Julia, a Ph.D. candidate in English, loved their in-depth, academic discussions on all things Star Wars and decided it would be a good idea to record and share them with the community. Since then, the two have recorded episodes on everything from the Camp aesthetic, to why Darth Maul would be Shakespeare’s favorite Sith, to using Tolkien to learn how to read Star Wars as a fairy tale. Through the podcast and the hosts’ continued presence on TikTok, they have been able to share their training and knowledge as English teachers with fellow Star Wars fans, demonstrating how to read the media they love from a different point-of-view. Beyond their own podcast, Fern and Julia have been frequent guests on other shows, often for book review episodes where they can further share their unique perspectives with the Star Wars community.
