Panel Overview
Entering the Stage [00:03] Host Krystina Arielle introduces the guests by asking the crowd what happens when two Inquisitors walk onto a stage filled with Jedi cosplayers. She then welcomes Moses Ingram and Rupert Friend to the Star Wars Celebration 2022 live stage. [00:41] Ingram and Friend take their seats and take in the massive crowd. Ingram expresses her disbelief and excitement, calling the moment crazy and noting that it feels surreal to be there in front of the fans. Landing the Roles [01:04] Arielle starts the interview by asking Ingram about her audition process and what it was like to land a role of this caliber. [01:24] Ingram describes the process as a really intense week. The role was originally under the code name “untitled disney project,” meaning she had no idea what she was auditioning for during the first two days. She outlines the escalating audition stages. The process started with casting director Carmen Cuba, then expanded to include director Deborah Chow, and eventually included a studio read with Ewan McGregor. During what she thought was a final Zoom audition, Chow surprised her by simply calling to say, “you’re going to be Reva.” [02:01] Arielle turns to Friend and asks him to share a bit about his character. [02:07] Friend introduces his character as the Grand Inquisitor. He describes him as one of the uber villains of the Star Wars universe and expresses his excitement that fans are finally getting to meet the character in a live-action show. Research and Inspirations [02:28] Noting that Inquisitors have appeared previously in Star Wars Rebels and Jedi Fallen Order, Arielle asks if either of them went back to watch those stories as research for their performances. [02:34] Ingram admits that she actually did not watch the animated appearances. Because Reva is being portrayed in live action for the first time, Ingram felt she had the freedom to make the character who she wanted her to be. Instead of looking at the animated shows, she chose to focus her research mainly on the prequel films. Connecting with the Fans [02:56] Arielle agrees with Ingram’s love for the prequels and asks both actors what specific elements they brought to their characters that they hope will connect with the audience. [03:10] Friend points out a detail that hardcore fans know but casual fans might not be aware of. He notes that the Grand Inquisitor used to be a Jedi, and he states that this backstory is super important for his portrayal of the character. [03:24] Ingram says the question is a tough one to answer without giving too much away. She carefully teases that Reva “aims to please in more ways than one” and leaves it at that to avoid giving out any spoilers. History with the Franchise [03:43] Arielle asks both guests about their personal history with Star Wars prior to being cast in the series. [03:49] Ingram reveals that she only knew about characters like Vader and Obi-Wan and had actually never seen the movies before. She explains that this project opened the door to the franchise for her. She says she prefers it this way because her introduction to the universe is now tied to deeply personal moments and memories like Star Wars Celebration, making it something she will remember forever. [04:21] Friend contrasts this by sharing that he grew up with the franchise. He talks about how he used to dress up as the characters and run around in the woods pretending to be them. [04:37] Arielle officially welcomes them both to the Star Wars family. She reminds the audience that the premiere of the series is only a few hours away and thanks Ingram and Friend for sitting down to share their experiences.
