Looking at Look-in – a social history of Star Wars in the UK as told through the pages of a kid’s TV listings magazine
Panel Overview
When Star Wars premiered in London in late 1977, one magazine was essential reading for the youth of the UK. ‘Look-in’ collated child-friendly TV listings from the Independent Television network, combined them with pop culture features and packaged it all in beautiful covers painted by movie poster artist, Arnaldo Putzo. Not only are these old magazines compelling collectibles from a simpler time, they chart a fascinating history of the impact of Star Wars over the course of the original trilogy. From initial hype, to cultural mainstay – ‘Look-in’ was there for it all, with full colour covers, pin-ups, free gifts, interviews and write-ups… and a generation of kids, hungry for any mention of their new favourite galaxy far, far away lapped it up, plastered their walls and filled their scrapbooks. Join us for a visually rich snapshot in time and a uniquely British take on a global phenomenon.
