Panel Overview

Take a look behind the curtains with the creators of Star Wars: Tales from The Galaxy’s Edge, the virtual reality experience that transports you to the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost, lets you visit Seezelslak’s Cantina, and explore the wilds of Batuu.

Panel Recap

Go Beyond the Spires in Virtual Reality: Making of ILMxLAB’s Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge took fans behind the scenes of the virtual reality experience set around Black Spire Outpost, Seezelslak’s Cantina, and the wilds of Batuu. Holly Frey moderated the panel, which featured Matthew Wood, Mark S. Miller, Alyssa Finley, Ross Beeley, and Marissa Martinez-Hoadley.

The panel covered the development and production of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge. Alyssa Finley described the experience as a classic Star Wars adventure, with the player entering the story as a droid repair technician on Batuu. Mark S. Miller discussed the originating idea behind the project: building an experience where players could begin from a central location and move into stories from across the galaxy and timeline.

Matthew Wood discussed his path to voicing Mubo, connecting the role back to his earlier sound work with Ben Burtt on the Utai of Utapau in Revenge of the Sith and later work connected to Mubo’s Droid Depot in Galaxy’s Edge. Marissa Martinez-Hoadley discussed the role of ILMxLAB’s QA team, including the team’s realization that the experience needed an “I have a bad feeling” style moment. Ross Beeley then worked that line into the experience.

The panel also included behind-the-scenes stories about Bobby Moynihan and Frank Oz. Mark S. Miller explained that Moynihan wanted to be part of ILMxLAB’s work after seeing Vader Immortal at Celebration Chicago 2019, leading to the creation of Seezelslak for him. Miller also described working with Frank Oz remotely during development and how meaningful it was for the team to hear Oz discuss Yoda’s performance.
